A few common questions

Before we talk.

You don't need every decision made before we talk. Start with these common questions about preparing a will, choosing an executor, and keeping your plans up to date.

What should I think about before discussing a will?

Consider the people you want to provide for, your assets and liabilities, and who you would trust to administer your estate. Bring any existing will and a list of questions. You do not need to have every decision settled before getting advice.

When should I review an existing will?

A change in family relationships, finances, business interests, or the people named in your will can be a reason to review it. A review helps identify whether the document still reflects your wishes.

What should I consider when choosing an executor?

Consider the person’s willingness, ability to manage financial and administrative work, and availability. Estate administration carries responsibilities, so it is worth discussing the choice with them and with your lawyer.

Does my will replace a power of attorney?

No. A will addresses your estate after death. Powers of attorney address decisions during your lifetime. Both can be considered as part of your estate plan.
